THE Thai Government is contemplating joining the Phang- nya river, which flows into the sea on the west coast of the Penin- sula, and the Tapi river at Surat-Thani, reports the Thai news- paper, "Pramuen Wan."
The Phang-nyn river is situated inland of the Papra Strait, which is approximately 239 miles from Penang, while Surat-thani is on the east coast, almost on the Isthmus of Kra.
The distance botween the two rivers is said to be about 20 kilometres, and the policy is to make this a combined stream navigable for small craft which
will only have to tráverse a dis- tance of from 600 to 800 kilo- metres,
This would be a highly valuable route, as at present ships travelling. from the Indian Ocean to the Gulf of Thailand have to go right round| the Malay Peninsula via Singapore.
