the proximity of the Police Barrack. As far as I am able to judge the ground in question is covered with buildings and its acquisition would therefore be costly yet it might be found to be more expensive than the erection of new buildings in the locality. On the other hand it is a distinct objection to such a plan that this extension would necessitate the erection of additional prison buildings.

7. As regards the acquisition of additional ground an extension may apparently be sought either above or below, that is to say, by extending the present site; by franchising which seems feasible either to resume the leaves of the land immediately above Chancery Lane (at the same time closing Chancery Lane, or carrying a passage between the existing gaol and the new site), or by resuming the houses now occupied for the Civil Hospital and the other premises which are bounded by the Old Bailey.
