turnkeys and guards. Of itself, the demolition of these magistracy buildings which are old, ill-looking and badly designed and worse constructed would not be a subject of regret because they have long ago been condemned as inadequate, and it is therefore a question whether the outlay of their re-erection which the Government would sooner or later have had to face independently of any gaol schemes should be charged at all to the latter.

25. Should new Police Courts be built they may be placed on the vacant lot opposite the Temporary Hospital shown in Drawing Nr. 1. They would form the ground floor of the pile of Police Buildings which has been so long contemplated and for which the site has been purchased since 1872. (vide Governor MacDonnell's Despatch to the Secretary of State Nr. 968 of 28th March 1872.

26. The cost of the erection of new Police Courts and Police Officers' quarters under one and the same roof which I estimate at $188,000 will form the subject of a separate Report from this Department.

27. I append a brief memorandum descriptive of the accompanying plans together with an abstract of the principal items of expenditure comprised in the Estimate of $95,779.
