of walls or partitions to separate the men walking there from one another, the centre serving No. 395 Wood, and the second a proposed side gate from the Police Barracks. The latter entrance is important as an argu... for a warder whence to survey the whole. There is, however, not ground enough for such circular inclosures here; the only alternative will be to walk the prisoners briskly in small batches and under the strictest silence round a large yard, carrying equidistant knots, each holding a knot in his right hand.
19. The proposed new reconstruction (Drawing 5) shows two entrances to the Gaol premises. The first is the present main entrance from Arbuthnot Road, with the necessity for a Police Guard at present on the Gaol. By means of this ready and direct access, the Guard will be relieved direct from the Police Barracks, at the proper hours.
20. Both these entrances, as well as the intervening gates, will be barred and guarded by sentries, and escape rendered impossible. The Gaol Enclosure wall averages twenty-five feet in height, and the coping bristles with broken glass along its entire length, rendering escape equally impracticable.
