It is stated that in the event of an attempted invasion a general alarm would be rung by the sounding of every church. bell throughout the county-per- haps throughout England-a8 a tocain:
The bells, it is explained, would be rung loudly and confidently as a call to battle, the peals continuing for five minutes.
