The yards may induce a beneficial scouring action when the tide is running out, tending to restrict the sea bottom to its present depth. It may be well to remove this misconception by stating that this can scarcely be expected, as the currents in Causeway Bay are powerless and feeble.
15. In conclusion, I would explain that the project, mooted by others, of running out a breakwater from Whitfield Police Station in a westerly direction, was abandoned after careful investigation because the great depth of soundings and the distance from the quarries made it too expensive, and because while sheltering a very much larger area of water than was actually required, it afforded no protection from the north or northwest.
16. The Estimate of the Causeway Bay work, now proposed, is Fifty thousand dollars ($50,000).
