AIR RAID SPOTTER-Many business buildings in London have placed air raid "spotters" on their roofs, instead of closing at report of raid. If planes approach too closely, they give alarm. Passed by British censor.

Kwangtung Goods To Hongkong

Waichow, Oct. 21. Goods worth over $5,000,000 aro known to have been exported from the East River districts to Hongkong in Chinese junks. The junks aro used instead of Chinese steamers, which formerly maintained a regu- lar service between East River and Hongkong prior to Japanese Occupation of Kwangtung.

The

Most of these Junks can carry goods up to over 500 picuts a trip. Wolffany,

an, ivestock, agricultural pro- ducts, feathers, tung oil and marine products of every description ave

among the products exported Hongkong via these sailing junks. Some metals and raw leather also come from Swatow via the East River.

In

In Chungshun the Japanese blockade of the coast having been relaxed somewhat due to the absenco of serious Bghting with the Chinese, Rome fish and vegetables also found their way recently into Hongkong vin Macao. The prices for Asli and vegetables are slightly higher in Hongkong than Macao, whleh le another reason which encourages the exporters of foodstuffs to favour Hongkong.

Silk Filatures Reopen

Some of the silk flatures which flourished in Shuntak district near Canton before the Japanese Invasion In 1938 have resumed business. About ten auch Chinese-owned silks flatures which escaped destruction when the Japanese occupied Shuntak have reopened, while some smaller Alatures have been newly organised. The Japanese authorities in Shun- tak have compelled the silk fatures to trade only with Japanese Arms in Shumeen when exporting their goods abroad. But the price offered by the Japanese in Shameen is only about half the amount which the producers can secure in Hongkong.

The Japanese in Canton have also Imposed a special tax on all kinds of silkt produced in the occupied area, whether imported for use in Canton or to be exported to foreign lands.
