LONDON, Sept. 3 (Router). -The Victoria Cross has been awarded to the late Acting Leading Seaman J. F. Mantle, of H.M.S. Foylebank.
The official account of his gallantry states that he was in charge of the atarboard "pom-pom" when the Foylebank was attacked by enemy aircraft on July 4.
Early in the action, his left leg was shattered by n bomb, but he stood fast at the gun and went on nring with the handgear only, for the ship's electric power had falled.
Almoxi at once he was wounded again in many places, but his great courage bure him up to the end of the Aght when he fell by the side of the Run which he had LO vnitantly Burved.
This is the tenth V.C. of the war and the third award to a Navat man. Awarde of D.S.M. to leading sea- men for bravery and devotion to duty on the same occasion are also approved

SPECIAL, TO THE "TELEGRAPH" LONDON, Sept. 3 (Domel).– This morning's air raid alarm over London lasted for four hours and 20 minutes, the first warning coming at 10.22 on the morning of the first anniversary of the war.
It is disclosed that German aerial netivity was widespread last night. and many parts of the country were allacked. However 'damage was sight and cusunlties few.
