How could they guess that there was anything wrong with their idul? There was certainly nothing unles with his batting. All that day. he kept the Noits bowlers.. and. Helders working overtime, and when the end come, 220 runs stood to Jack's credit on the score-board.
At eleven o'clock the follow- ing day, before that important Surrey match could be continu- ed, Britain declared war on Ger- many. This staggering decision meant the finish of cricket for that season. The match against Notts was concluded, then came the announcement that the mill- tary authorities had comman- deered the Oval.
