Tunney and Dempsey Best Off

IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED that during the ton years that John L. Sullivan strode at the head of the heavyweights of the world he earned a for- tune around £180,000, but through overwhol- ming gonerosity, when he died in a little village in America all ho possessed was the hut in which ho passed away, and even that was mortgaged.

Those were the days when million-dollar gates and big purses were not known, and for this fact alone, the fortune he amassed and spent was an extraordinary achievement.

For the Dempsey-Tunney fight in 1926, Dempsey collected £125,000 for losing the title.
