There was a time when Hongkong had some direct trade with Sulu, as well as a fair indirect trade through Manila. With the freedom of commerce secured by the recent Protocol this trade should revive, unless unfortunately the Sultan is induced to believe that the British Government wishes him to resist the Spaniards.

As long as this state of irritation is kept up, no Hongkong trader will send a ship to Sulu.
