FRENCH VERSION
Says They Were Stabbed In Back By Churchill
Marseilles, July 3,
the
The French Admiralty account of the incidents leading up to Anglo-French action in the Mediter- ranean, described by Mr. Winston Church in the Commons yesterday. has been issued from Vichy and published by lavas. The communi- que states:
"On July 3 British squadron composed of three ships of the line, uf which Hood was one, an aircraft jcarrier and a certain number of cruisers and destroyers, arrived at Messel Kebir where the French force was lying, comprising two ships of the line, Dunkerque and Strasbourg, also Provence, and Bretagne, three second class cruisers und д certain number of light vessels and sub- marines which were not in a condi- tion to proceed to sea at once.
"The British Admiral sent Admiral Gensoul the following ultimatum.- Join British fleet or destroy your ships within six hours so that they shall not fall into German or Italian hands."
The communique does not mention the other alternative which Mr. Churchill mentioned yesterday.
The communique continues—“in case this was refused the British Buld they would not hesitate to destroy the chips themselves. Admiral Gen- soul refused, Ho declared he would meet force with force and the first shell fired would see the whole French fleet Uned up against Britain -a result the very opposite of what he desired. The Admiralty and Gov- ernment approved this, and the Arm- istic Commissions were notified.
"It will be recalled
Germany that jand Italy had not demanded the sur- render of the French Beet but only its

recall to French ports, France would not consent to surrender the fleet. Mar- shal Pelain and Admiral Dorlan re- pented this 20 times over to Mr. Winston Churchill, the First-Lord-of the_Admiralty, Mr. A. V. Alexander, and the Ambassador, Sir Ronald Campbell.

"Even before the ultimatum pired the British Admiral had magne- tle mines dropped from the
air in the channel leading from Mersel Kebir and on the expiration of the ultimatum the British ships opened fire on the French ships which were still at anchor but returned the fire asslated by the coast batteries.
"'It appears Breigne was blown up. Dunkerque, Provence and Mogador had Bres aboard. The other ships were able to get under way and form contact with French warships sent to meet them."
The communique concludes that the French sailors reacted indignant- jly against the treason of their old
comrades in arms-Reuter.
