has been many years in the Colony and although he speaks English well and understands it very well yet he never could be
a good Interpreter. He
has got anything but a strong
brain
and gets easily confused and cannot sustain
effort. He is
paid $35 per month but the salary
on the Estimates is $50. We have tried
many Indian Interpreters here..
but never could get a man to whom
there was not some grave objection.
For languages other than Chinese, Portuguese, Malay and Sikh
we are obliged to swear in temporary
interpreters.
Perhaps I may add that all the Indian and Portuguese Interpreters speak Chinese and so do the Clerks in this office. In fact, the 1st Clerk too is a good Interpreter and occasionally acts for one of the Chinese Interpreters in case of indisposition. The Chinese Interpreter for Coroner's cases is Mr Chan Jae Kwong.
