DW. Bedell speaks Punité and Southern Mandarin. I consider him a really good interpreter. He is a man of ability and grasps quickly the points of CARE, and experience here is most useful.

The 1st Chinese Interpreter is thoroughly conscientious. I look upon him as a forcible and thorough interpreter.

The 3rd Choice Interpreter ...B Mr. Li Hong. He is on leave on a grant of $40 per month. He has been here a short time, but is a useful man. He speaks Punti, Hakka, Chinchew, and Tokien dialects as well as Malay. His English is better than his Chinese, but he is improving in the latter. Owing to his early bringing up among foreigners, I found that he had a loose way of interpreting which was calculated to lead to error, but by careful watching, I have got him to understand the great importance of accuracy, and I consider him now a fair interpreter.

The post of 3rd Interpreter is vacant at present.

The Portuguese Interpreter is also an assistant European clerk. He is much more useful as a clerk than as an interpreter. In any heavy case requiring ability, and steady...
