The well-known hollow battalion square, illustrated in photograph above from the film "The Light That Failed" was introduced, strangely enough, by the Ger- mans, in the war against Austria in 1740--two centuries *ugo. At that time it represented that most modern method of defence, being considered impregnable almost up to the time of Waterloo. It was employed extensively by the British forces, especially in Egypt, the Sudan and India. The method, now used again by Britain to defeat the new methods of warfare used by the Germans, wan vividly illustrated in the films "The Four Feathers" and "The Light That Failed."
