Whether justice was done depended mainly on the accuracy of the interpretation.

At Singapore, the staff of Interpreter was very superior to those we have here.

Mr. Pickering, the head interpreter, could speak five or six dialects (Chinese).

Under him were a German gentleman who also spoke more than one dialect, and two or three Chinese apprentices were called upon.

Interpreters were allotted normally to the Colonial Secretary's department, but Mr. Pickering's personal services could always be had in touch when he was not actually employed by the Government. He frequently went round to the different Courts and listened to the Chinese Interpreters. He brought the Chinese pupils to the various Courts and asked the judge to allow them, in his presence, to interpret for a short time.

M. Karl, in the same way, frequently attended the Courts, and not only interpreted himself but also checked and corrected the regular Interpreters.
