Besides interpreting speeches to a certain extent he appears to understand that witnesses seem to understand.

Mr. Chan Jai Kwong speaks the Hakka dialect to a small extent, but generally declines to act as Interpreter if another is at hand.

Mr. Chan Lai Kwong is also the Interpreter at Coroner's Inquests.

This is a most inconvenient arrangement, as he is conversant with the Hakka dialect, and his services are frequently required. The mixed dialects (whatever these may be) Mandarin, also Hindustani though, and Portuguese his native tongue.

Professional Interpreters are employed by the Coroner when his presence in Court is necessary.
