New Rail Fares:

"Abominable

Decision

A DEPUTATION is to be sent from the London Workers' War Vigilance Com- mittee to the Minister of Transport to press for an inquiry into the authorised 10 per cent, increase in ruil fures and rates, it was stated at a protest meeting of the com- mittee recently.

1

There was a strong feeling throughout the organised workers of London against the imposition of increased fares, said the chairman, Mr. Robert Willis, secretary of the London Trades Council. Hardship on the travelling public merited consideration as well as the interests of the companies and, their shareholders.

Mr. Herbert Morrison, M.P., said the railway companies and the Government were finan- cially Interested in keeping up railway revenue and there was no impartial person in this instance to look after the interests of railway users.

A privilege existing since the days of the Saxons has enabled Mr. T. Newman, the squire of the manor of Coryton, Devon, to con- scripi parashots. He has called up thirty villagers.

"The travelling public is to be taxed an additional 10 per cent. despite the fact that Increases of revenue have been set aside. There have been increases, for the Minister said that after allowing for a fall of £4,000,000 In passenger revenue there was an increase of about £91⁄4 millions in revenue over a period of 32 weeks, and there are 20 weeks more to HD,

"Tribunal Ignored"

"That is an abominable arrange- ment and an abominable decision.”

Mr. Morrison complained that the Ministry hud ignored the Railway Rates Tribunal,

Mr. John Corin, of the Co-opera- tive Movement, sald the proper tribunal had not been used and that the Minister made the Increnses in 1 private conference with interested partles acting as judge and jury.

Mr. John Wilniet, M.P.. said: will call a spade a spade. This busi- ness is a

a dirty racket.

If the public mind was not occu- pied with matters of life and death and if the debate bad not taken place nt the close of the Budget slatement, this agreement would have been on outstanding.. financial scandal.

Woman's Protost

Miss B. A. Godwin, general secre- tary of the Women Clerks and Secre- taries' Association, said the railways should be run as public services in the interesis of the community and not in the interests of stockholders.

A number of interrupters, believed to be Communists, created a disturb ance during the meeting, but there was no opposition to
