ROTTERDAM. NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD Dorothy Hughes, London typist who has been a prisoner in Germany since war broke out, has reached Rotterdam, free after six months. Her fiance is still in a German jail,

She told how she was kept in a small cell with forty other women, was given bad food, and had to sleep on the stone floor. Miss Hughes and her flance left London on August 26 for a holiday in Vienna. A friend who was going to see his fiancec in Vienna travelled with them.. "Bóth men were taken away from our hotel on September 8," Miss Hughes said to me, “and I had to stay there alone. I was not allowed to go out.

"On December 1 the police took

"I was put with forly other women In a ecli no

bigger than a large double bedroom. The women were all street girls or criminals. Some had consumption or other complaints.

"The wardresses hated

me for being English. They said so. One

told me, 'I loathe the English,

and this is the way to treat you.' "We had to 10 to bed at ve o'clock in the afternoon. Then we were called at three in the morning. "We slept on the stone floorn with only rough, dirty mattresses, 1 had to sleep with all my clothes on to try to keep warm.

The food was terrible--sour bread and sour soup,

"We had nothing to read, and not even a needle to do a little worl with. We could do nothing except huckle together, and talk or cry.

No Open Windows

"They would not let us open a window. When we tried; a wardress came and sealed it up.

"Once a week we were allowed to have a shower. Then we had to un- dress, bathe and dress again in ve minutes.

"After a time they moved me to THIS WEEK another cell where there were eight

other girls, all political prisoners.

"A Jugo-Slav girl in the cell had She pleaded for a ⚫ wound. doctor, and at last one came, but he did not return for three weeks. Then they took her away.
