For this little follow a sombre world has sud- denly brightened. His mother has given him his first taste of Castoria –the children's laxative. And he loved it!
Even the taste of Castoria is made especially for children. It is also prepared just as carefully for a child's needs.
It contains only puro, vegetable ingredients that are suitable for a chlid. Castoria never causes griping pains. It is completely safe. It acts gently, yet thoroughly. Gat a battle today.

MARVELS OF
MODERN
THE first torpedo consisted of an explosive charge on the end of a long pole.
This pole was carried by a launch so that it stuck out over the bows like a long bow- sprit, and a torpedo attack consisted of creeping up to the enemy ship, thrusting the charge on the end of the pole against her side, and aring it.
That method was only used once in action, and then the attacking launch was also destroyed, which was hardly surprising.
of
It is a far cry from that primi- Live weapon to the modern self- propelled torpedo, capable rushing at its target pt nearly fifty miles an hour, and travelling for mony miles on an accurate course and at a set depth below the surface of the sexa.
Yet the self-propelled torpedo is a weapon which has been developed comparatively recently.
Admiral of the Flect Lord Chatfeld, the British Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence, witnessed, what he was a young officer serving in H.MS. War- spite, the first self-propelled torpedo attack on a heavy ship in history,
That was during the Chilean Revolution, when the battleship Blanca Encalada was sunk by tor- pedo attack from torpedo gunboats.
The first self-propelled
torpedoes were driven by compressed air. They were known as "cold" tor- pedoes. They worked fairly well, except that their speed tailed off as the pressure of the compressed alr became reduced, and they left a very marked track of air bub- bles.
THESE disadvantages were over" come by the development of what is known as the 'Seater" torpedo. Compressed air sull plays an im portant part in the propulsion of these torpedoes, and the vessel" in which the compressed air is contained forms the grenter part of the hull of the modern torpedo. The compressed air, how- ever, no longer drives the torpedo, The air mixes with all fuel and is burnt in the inside of a “genera- tor". Down the outside..of tho "generator" ruos water.
Bo high is the temperature of the "generator" that the air, olt and water which go in at one end come out at the other in the

forms of super-heated steam mixed with the gases of combus- tion. It is this mixture which drives the engine.
The engine of a modern torpedo is a marvel. It is a four-cylinder radial engine which fits into the twenty-one inch diameter of the torpedo's hull and teken up only about nine inches of its length. This little engine develops somo three hundred horse-power, and ja one of the most efficient power- units in the world. It is water- cooled by the sea, and it needs cooling for if a torpedo were run hot out of the water the engine would be reduced to a mass of molten metal in a very short time.
The engine drives, through gear- ing, two propellors which revolve la opposlie directions. If there were only one propellor its grip on the water would tend to make the streamlined torpedo revolve while the propellor Itself remained still.
*
TIE depth below the surface at which a torpedo will run is regu- lated by horizontal rudders on the tail, which are operated by a com- bination of hydrostatic valve and a pendulum weight. The weight takes charge if the nose of the tor- pedo goes up or down, while the valve actuated by the sea pres sure according to the depth which the torpedo is set to run. The direction of the torpedo 13 controlled by vertical ruddera operated by * highly efficient gyroscope run by compressed air.

The explosive charge of a lor- pedo is, of course, carried in the head, and it is red when a tor- pedo hits ils farget by means of o "pistol" which fits onto the nose of the torpedo. This "pistol" con- tains the detonator and firing mechanism. It is provided with steel "whiskers" which stand out almost to the diameter of the tor-- pedo, so that If the torpedo striices a glancing blow on its target, one, at least, of these "whiskers" in cer- tain to be struck and the torpedo fred. The actual weight of ex- plosive in the head of a torpedo is secret, but experience has shown the power of these under- water weapons.
The modern torpedo 'is an ex- ceedingly complicated piece of mechanism, and every part has to be necurate, not only as for ns micrometer measurements are con- cerned, but also as regards weight. This is because a torpedo is very delleate. For efficient running a torpedo mus
must have virtually по tendency either to float or to sink, so that its weight is matter of nice calculation. Even the exact amounts of air, water, fuel and the rest of the things with which it is charged have to be carefully cal- eulated so that the resulting weight is right.
It is not surprising that a highly compliested and delicate mechanism like a torpedo ahould be expensive. If you wanted to buy a modern torpedo and were able to do so you would not sce much change out of £2,000.
Test Your Taste
Menu "A" is badly assorted, Pea Soup and Roast Duck are both heavy, rich dishes and should not be combined. Feas occur twice, in the soup and as n vegetable. Mashed potatoes are wrong with the duck
Merckling
"B" ia beiter. In fact, there is nothing wrong with It unt!! the sweet, which is too rich to fol- low the duck. If only the hostess who arranged this menu had ended her dinner with the ice in Menu "A" It would have been a perfectly balanced meal.
In the grouping of "A" there
Is a confusion of motives. The naturalistle designs on the rug clash with the formal modernistic lines of the furniture. The flowers BOMO are out of place for the
reason.
The drop antique, handles on the tall-boy conflict with the rounded moderti handles on the dressing table.
In "B" there is one formal molive observed consistently throughout so as to make on harmonious whole. The rug in plain, there are flowers. The tallboy handles have also been made to match those on the dresser,
na
The first Programme, Concert "A" is just a jumble of items, ench one good in itself but strung together without pattern. There is no plece substantial enough to bulld the Items around. Also they are too monotonously alike. The two Schubert songs are similar, and there are two serenades, while the final Item leaves a sense of Incom- pleteness.
Concert "B" builds up the atten- tion of the audience item by item to the climax. Then, when their faculties have been fully roused, comes a break to give them a rest before the bit item of the oven- ing, which sends them home with something to think over and discuss.
