Hair Like This
1. If your upward hair takes the downward path in the wind and the rain, just let it go down and secure it at the back with a real old-fashioned school bow or slide.
2. If you were one of the wise girls who kept a plait of your hair when it was first shingled and shorn some years ago, now's the time to use it. Any simple schoolgirl style can be made sophisti- cated for evening by the addition of an absolutely flat bun, pinned on rather high up, just above the nape of the neck.
Hanks Like This
1. Don't tie your head hanky like a peasant any more. Do it a la Martinique-like the coal- black mammies. Either fold your hanky on the straight

A useful tip to remember after washing a khaki skirt, blouse, or handkerchief, is to rinse them in) water to which a teaspoonful of per-

2. Or fold the hanky on the cross, put it round your head with the broad side in front, and bring the ends up again to tie on top. This is pretty done with two fairly thin hankies in contrasting
shades.

All the "knitteds" jumpers, hoods, scarves, and the rest, will wash benu- ilfully in pure soap flakes and warm water softened with little borax. Remember sudden changes of tem- perature while washing are the cause of shrinkage
and loss of elasticity. Rinsing should be very thorough, und for white woollles add
uttle blue to the water. Coloured ones prefer a cupful of vinegar which helps keep them fully and soft.
What about your
mackintosh? Eucalyptus oil will remove stalns. Avoid benzine, which is not suitable for rubber. Keep a mackintosh hung in the dark as this will help to pre-
serve the rubber.

2. Not really a hat, but the hood is taking firmer and firmer hold on fashion's head. The newest cardigans have a hood attached which can be worn off the head, and then look like a little cape collar at the back. Any good knitter can make her own with a straight strip of knitting folded in the centre and joined up the back. It can be separate or attached to the garment as you like, but in any case will need a drawstring to keep it snug round your
neck.

HOUSE plants, die mostly from
want of water. Sometimes, however, it is because their leaves are so dusty that they cannot breathe, for plants do breathe, taking in im- pure carbon dioxide and giving out oxygen, thus purifying the air for man and animals. When their leaves are dusty, plants are practically suffocated. Therefore wash their leaves frequently.
Plants such as palms, and aspidis- tras should have their leaves sponged gently each time they are watered. Equal parts of lukewarm water and milk should be used, and each leaf carefully supported with the hand to prevent
it from getting bruised. When watering plants always use

A litle castor all put on the top of the soll before watering palms and aspidistras, once every six weeks, is good for the plants. Use about two teaspoonfuls to a pot. Coffee grounds, cold ten, and tea leaves are excellent for mixing with the curth In flowerpots, especially for ferns,
An excellent method of keeping plants sufficiently well watered and yet not too wet when you are away from home is to stand a vessel of water near the plants and then pro- cure some pieces of thick wool.
Place one end of each of these in the water and the other end in the General flower-poi.
The wool will absorb the water, which will then drip slow- ly on the plants. A little powdered charcoal added to the water will keep it fresh.

A spoonful of powdered charcoal in the water in which cut flowers are placed will make them last as long as though they were still on the plant without any need of changing the water. A small piece of camphor, a teaspoonful of glycerine, or even n lump of sugar has a similar effect.
Always strip the leaves from leafy stalks before placing them in water. The leaves soon decay, pollute the water, and cause the flowers to die, Split up the ends of thick and abrous stems before placing them in water.
They are thus enabled to drink up more water and last lenger.·
