FRANK CRITICISMS

Placing Players In Unaccustomed Positions

I NOW DEAL with a trial playing anomaly which, I

Backs: V. C. Bond (O.R.A.) and Datta Rum (Rafputana Rifles),

Halves: G. W. Haok (it.A), w.fear, is becoming too common. I deplore the method of Reed (Club), and N. B. Whitley selectors placing players for important games in positions Forwards: S. A. Fowler (Club), to which they are not accustomed. Pritam Nath (Raj.), Sgt. Homburg

(C.B.A.).

IN AN INTERPORT TRIAL hold on the Club ground, King's Park, last Sunday, Colours and White drew 2-2, after positional changes were made in both attacks after the interval.

A. In the first half, the White who looked to be the Prob- ables, led by a goal scored by Partaub Singh. The Colours, however, gave their rivals quite as much as they received.

The display on the whole was moderately good, and if one took form in this trial as a guide, it would appear that the Selectors have still a problem to solve with the Colony right wing combination and wing halves.

Bonwell, in goal for the Colours, got through a lot of useful work, and with the ex- ception of the only blunder he made, which resulted in a goal -the ball was cleared to an opponent instead of into touch

his display on the whole was superior to Souza's. The latter, though sound in his clearances, was always slow to advance.

The Whites backs, V. Bond and Dalta Ram, formed a better com- hination to that of J. Gonsalves and R. J. Reed, though the last named gave a very sound exhibition.

There was little to choose between the balves, except that W. A. Reed,

Colours left-half, were the pick of their lines.

Among the forwards, the Whites' left wing combination of Narain. and Partaub Singh was the highlight of both attacks; they showed plenty of dash and shooting power,

The players referred to are Capt. Hook (R.A.) and R. J. Reed (Nomads). Both centre halves, and play in that position for their respective tes, yet the Selectors deemed

it fit to play the former as a LONDON, Mar, 6 (Router)-Cam-right half in the trial, and the bridge beat Oxford by 77 points to 40 latter as left back. In the Anuuat Inter-Varsity Athletle It is a good job that Gurbachon Meet to-day. an inside left. The first two particu- lar cases created much comment.

In an important trial, surely, every player can only be judged when he is playing in his rightful position? He cannot de proper justice to him- self when he knows he has no real optitude or skil to a portion in which he has never or seldom played. The Selectors would have done something worth walle had they formed an intermediate line of W. A. Reed, Capt. Hook and E. J. Iteed. A stronger or more constructive half line would be difficult to find.

Goal-keeper: V. M. Benwell,

Forwards: Shah Wall, Li. Pritam Nath, Sgt. Homburg, Narala Singh and Pertaub,

R. J. Reed is also a brilliant left half, and should be given a trial in that position.

According to Tony Alves display trial, the Selectors have no 20

alternative but to include him in the 230 interport team.

WAMO

I prefer Homburg us leader, be- cause Pritam Nath in the first half appeared to be lacking in speed and shooting strength.. I have also, In- cluded Shah Wali in place of Sid Fowler. The latier at times Wag neat in his passing schemes, but is not as fast as of yore. The former was practically starved, but when he received a pass he made the fullest use of it.

N. Whitley, strange to

any, has fallen off this season, and had nothing of his usual quickness in: hosteoing back in defence. Though

I would prefer Brown, of the Police, as right half, Capt. Hook has caught the eye of the Selectors, and I am certain he won't let the team down."

There is no doubt that Benwell Is the best goalkeeper we have, and he 40 is a certainty. Lockhart is good, but too inexperienced at the moment. If he keeps up his present form he should make the interport team next year. The remaining players need no introduction, and should walk into the side,
