despatch- of January last; and in the No. 60 of the 19th of July I laid before Your Lordship a return of nine of those prisoners who had been sent off in one batch on the 22nd of January, after having served one third of their sentences in the Hongkong Gaol: the sentences ranging from 8 years penal servitude to 3 months imprisonment.

2. On making further enquiry, I find that the total number branded and deported that month was fifty. In addition to these, forty-three convicted prisoners were deported, in the same month without branding. Of the latter number, thirty-nine had been convicted of mendicancy. On the whole it therefore appears that eighty-three convicted prisoners were deported in the month of January 1877. In the five following months of the present year one hundred and six prisoners were deported, including eighty-three convicted of mendicancy. During the year 1876, there were three hundred and eighty-four prisoners deported from Hongkong to China, and of these three hundred had been convicted of mendicancy.
