As said above, this is merely the view of the case which I propose to submit to His Excellency the Governor. I will not fail to inform you of whatever is done further in the matter.
The Postmaster at Yokohama is at present drawing £500 per annum and has quarters. The late Postmaster at Shanghai had £600 and quarters. Eur. Harff's Salary is £500 per annum.
These sums represent English incomes of about half their respective amount.

I have received your letter of the 5th instant, No. 581 reporting the death of Eur. J. P. Martin, the British Postmaster at Shanghai.
You state that you are about to communicate with the Governor of Hong Kong as to the steps to be taken in filling up this appointment, and that, anticipating the probable suppression of the British Postal Agencies in Japan, you are writing to Alfred Lister Esq.
