nine Chinese teachers; that the pupils pay fees and that the Government lays out more than twice as much public money on that one school than it does on all the other schools in the colony put together.

In the village of Aberdeen Government School, whilst Mr. Stewart returns 74 on the roll, the average daily attendance for 1876 was under 18. The Government School for Girls in the town of Victoria shows an average daily attendance of 64 against 133 on the roll. The total average daily attendance at all the 30 Government Schools, including the Central School, amounted only to 1,193 for 1876, whilst Mr. Stewart had 2,171 on his lists. Eleven other schools received Government assistance under what is called the Grant-in-Aid scheme.

In these schools the average daily attendance for 1876 was 514, against 751 on the books.

Counting together the Government schools and the Grant-in-Aid Schools, there were 1,707 children in average attendance. This shows that the Government vote for public instruction in Hongkong educates only 1 in 82 of the population.
