Ship's Cook Faces Jury On Charge of Murder

A request to the Jury not to be swayed by what they had read in the Press but to return their verdict in accordance with the evidence was made by Mr. T. J. Gould, Assistant Crown Solici tor, at the Criminal Sessions this morning, when he prosecuted Hui Fook-sing, 43, cook, for the murder of Pun Yau-sze, coolie, opposite the Douglas Wharf on October 30.

Hul, it will be recalled, was re- arrested and committed for trial by! Mr. R. A. D. Forrest, former Mugis-, trofe, after a similar charge against him had been dismissed by Mr. R. Edwards, another Magistrate. He is being defended by Mr. H. W. Loc. J. M. D'Almada ! instructed by Mr.

Remedios.

The case is being tried by the Chief! Jualice, Sir Atholl MacGregor, and the following Jury: Messrs. C. A. Goldenberg (Foreman), Lom Ho-yin,! Lee Chung-yew, Chia Perl-hong, J. Krogh-Moe, D. P. Fuerles and Poul Lec.

Stabbed Near Wharf

Mr. Gould sald Hui was employed os a cook on board the ss. Scistan, and the scene of the alleged crline was almost immediately opposite the Dougins Wharf, where the steamer was moored at the time.

"About & a.m. on the day in ques- tion," said Mr. Gould, "three stree! coolies, who were sleeping under the verandah opposite the wharf, were awakened by sounds of quarrelling.

"They saw

three men, including Ilui, having a quarrel with Pun. Shortly after, two of the men, who

carrying

were

Funny bags, ran through the grille to the wharf, leaving Hui and Pun behind. Pun attempted to strike Ilui, who re- taliated by producing a knife from his pocket and striking Pun in the left side of the abdomen with it.

"Hul then ran to the wharf while Pun collapsed on the road, after staggering a few paces.

"Throw Knife into Soa"

"On reaching the wharf, Li threw the knife into the sea.

"The grille was then closed by an Indian watchman named-Bhag Singh, this who explained that he did because several men were attempting to enter.

"He would also say that whilst he was in the urinal he heard the word

Kill, but on coming out he sawi nothing to gecount for that remark, though he found Pun lying on the rond. He took no notice of this.

First, he has no money to spare for the costs of the immigration.

His loot in Poland was muller than he

the frontier, and the busly anticip ated from the Polish Jews did not come up to hopes.

And the homecoming of the Balle German was to have been financed with this Tolish booty.

Of all the promises the Nazla had made to these emigres, only one can now be fulfilled.

They can be given land in con- quered Poland: there is enough of that.

But there is not the lenst hope of replacing for them the capital they had to leave behind in their Ballie homes.

Many of them, seeing no future ahead, have already committed sui- cide in despair.

Russia Draws Veil- Over War

MOSCOW.

*** MOSCOW radio has closed down without mentioning the war in Finland.

Except for the oficial war com- munique, there is little news of the fighting in the Press.

It is clear from the communique that any gains that may have been mude are insignificant.

Prominence is given, however, to the German denial that the Nazis are sending arms to Finland.

Russian military headquarters at Leningrad denied thai dum-dum bullets or poison gas had been used against the Flans.

LATE NEWS

NAZI ARMS FOR RED INVADERS

the

LONDON, Feb. 5 (Reuter)-The

of Stockholm correspnodent "Daily Telegraph" states that two German vessels from the Balile took on pilots in Norwegian territorial waters south of Oslo on Friday.

The vessels were found to be lood- ed with artillery and small arms and ammuntiion for the Russians based at Petsamo (Finland) and Murmansk.

The steamers can remain in Scan- dinavian waters for almost the en- tire voyage to the Aretic coast of Finland and Russia.

It is expected that they will un- load their cargoes during the week- end, probably at the port for Pet-

samo.

The correspondent states that this traffe has been proceeding for at least a month, and the use of large German supplies on the Aretle front has caused great bitterness among the Finns.
