Press On Food Rationing
Measures Generally Welcomed
LONDON, Dec. 29 (Reuter)The rationing of food was the subject of comment in the British Press to-day, following the announcement that would bo rationed from Bugar January 8, together with bacon and butler.
While most papers accept the rationing as a necessary measure to conserve the war effort, the "Daily Mall" and "Daily Express" take the other line and say that it la not necessary.
Fair Distribution of the The majority
papers emphasise the Minister of Food's statement that rationing means fair distribution.
The Times" says that rationing will give more room in British ships for other imports necessary to the war effort. There are other foods which can be obtained more easily. Jam is outside the sugar ration.
Concerning meat ralloning, the "Times" welcomes the assurances that the scheme for controlling meat and livestock will be operated by traders, not bureaucrats.
Proper Decision
The "Dally Telegraph" describes the scheme as part of the contribu tion the home consumer makes to the national effort. Everyone will get un equal share.
The "Manchester Guardian" says that it is the proper decision to make, Rationing has to come if the war is to last any time, and one might well net.officially and openly instead of by backstair methods.
The "News Chronicle" says that rationing will not seriously alter the standard of living. Rationing will prevent that scramble for supplies in which the poorest will go to the wall.
