smuggling system

smuggling from Kongshing to the
coast of China on the mainland
of opium
is carried on in
fast and
vessels constructed and equipped expressly
for evading the blockade of
the Chinese Revenue cruisers.
The smuggling junks are
well armed and sometimes offer
desperate resistance to the Chinese Government
vessels. We mention
a case
that occurred in Namoa
last year in which three
of the crew of
one of these smuggling junks were killed after exchanging fire with the Chinese Government cruiser.
The smuggling junks often sought refuge in Kongshing harbour.
