THRED Merchant Ser- vice captains who out- witted U-boats on the high seas, an able sea- man, and an obscure In- dian mahout elephant driver-in a Bengal jun- gle have been linked as heroes in the pages of the London Gazette.

The three captains each re colved the Order of the British Empire-the first awards made to the Merchant Service in this war. They are:---

Caplan Thofnas 11. Farrar, of the Baharkian (5,470 tons), owned by the Strick Line, London. Commander Edward T Grayston, D.SC., R.NR. (roiired), of the 8,457-ton Koramea (Shaw Savill and Albion Co., Ltd., London). Captain Albert A. White, of the 4,803- ton Stonepool (Slr R. Ropner and Co., West Hartlepool).

The able seaman ia Frederick George Hayter, gunlayer of the Stonepool. He receives the Medal of the Order of the British Empire for a five-hour night with a U-boat.

That is the word, too, which Athman Sing Dhanwar, somewhere la Jalpaiguri, Bengal, will receive for hk jungle exploit.

Here are the heroes' stories, as told by the London Gazetio:—
