a) report to Inspector Grey - at about 9 o'clock I received a communication in consequence of which I went to the Central Station where the Inspector exhibited to me a watch and my chain, the same now in court: at that time both the prisoners were in custody, but I have no knowledge of the question.

Constable 197 was with me. I went to Central Market and thence to Paipingchan. I heard something about the 1st prisoner who is known to me, and this is what I heard had reference to the upper floor of Hollywood Road. I saw both prisoners there walking down close to each other. I said to 1st prisoner "give me that watch" he enquired "what watch:". I answered "that watch you stole from a European at Central Market this morning". 1st Prisoner replied "Oh, I have employment. I am not a thief now". I said "it is that. I have made enquiries about your saying and the persons you stole it." I turned to 2nd Prisoner and said to him "have you seen the watch" he replied
