WINDY WEATHER AT
Penalty Strokes For
Hitting Flag From Within Twenty Yards
(By "Birdie")
A MORE DIFFICULT WIND for golf than that of Sunday can hardly be imagined. "I do not know quito how bad it was at Fanling, whera| thore is a certain amount of shelter from the trees, but the brawny Scotsmen seemed to have weathered it in fine style-judging by the result of the annual Societies match.
At Sheungshiu, on the open Country Club course, it swept unimpeded right across the line of holes, and made it a most unfortunate day for the playing of the first round of the Ladies Cup competition. Scores reached collossal proportions, but I will not mention them.
Worst of all, it was impossible to keep the Band on the greens, The wind swept them bare, and left only the clay upon which ta putt. The rain, however, had made them soft, and when one Wis canny enough to make wind allowances, approach shots stay- od there.
In fact after playing them, it seems indicated that until gräss greens are forthcoming, tho Club has a solution to its great- est problem; namely, how to deal with the greens when they harden. And that is keep them well watered and thus soften them.
There was, however, only one sur- prise result, and that was the elimina- tion of Miss Molly Churn by Miss L. G: Ablong.
The results were

The United States Golf Associa- tion is keeping a watchful eye for violators of the amateur code. Each entrant in the 1939 amateur championship was asked to name his employer, the nature of his em- ployer's business and the nature of his own business.

Fortress R. Engineers Defeat R.A.0.C.
The defenders of both teams play- ed well and slaved off many quick attacks. The Engineers' forwards wern allghtly quicker than Ordnance and also showed more ball control and accurate shooting.
Play in the first half was fairly even, und the second period SAW both teams opening vigorously. Hum- burg broke through the defence and netfed a high shot to give Royal En- gineers the only goal of the games.
Both the R.A.O.C. forwards and defenders played hard but the former lost several attacking opportunities which apolled chances to score.
The two goalkeepers, Dobson for R.E., and Osmund for R.A.O.C., dis- tinguished themselves by good play. Russell, Goodwin, Bowling and Mar- rlott proved formidable defenders for the winners. Stone and Lock were prominent amongst the hard-workers of R.A.O.C.
