IX men are, now the supreme rulers of Germany. Hitler has placed absolute power in their hands. They are described as a " twilight administration " linking together the civil, military and economic authorities.

This "Ministerial Council for the defence of the Reich" can pass laws and issue decrees without the consent of Hitler, the Cubinct, or the Reichstag,

For the very first time Hitler has abandoned his position as Germany's sole Dictator. A new six-in-one Dictator has sprung up by his side, and he has appointed it.

1

But Hitler is in no danger of being superseded. They are all men he can rely on.

Here they are. These are their tasks.

He had three strong compell- tors in the race-Goebbels, Rib- bentrop and Secret Police-chief Himmler. He has outclassed them all. Algnificantly, not one of them is on this new Council,

Goering's appointment is not really a surprise. For many years now he has been economie dictator of Germany and economics will play the main part in Germany's war plans.

South could see that the trumps would clear in one round, and it seemed to him that he should try to make a Heart trick somehow. West was marked with the three Aces, the King of Hearts, and probably the Queen of Diamonds, but he might not have the 10 of Hearts,

South (in the Duplicate match in which the hand came up) won the trick with the Ace and lost the Anesse of the 10 of Diamonds to the Queen with East. A Spade was re- turned and, on South running it to. the Queen, he lost the trick to West's King Result: One Down.

South should have realised that West's opening lead must be the "lop of nothing," and possibly a short ɛult, Such n lend should mean that West has probably a better sult with a tenace in it from which he does not choose to lead Spades, even Diamonds heated by the Queen., The solution, therefore, will have to be a "squeeze."

South should therefore take the Club in his own hand and finesse tho 10 of Diamonds, which, as we see, loses to the Queen. On the obvious return of a Spade, South wins with the Ace and then runs off the Dia- monds, at the same time unblocking the Clubs.

At the stage. South ean, from West's play, almost certainly put the King of Spades with him, and can also count his hand as having consisted of 5 Spades, 4 Hearts, 2 Diamonds, and 2 Clubs.

On the lead of the last Diamond,

Here was the present from South West is "squeezed." The position is

to West, by the discard by South of this "a loser of o laser,“ and now West is trapped. If he leads a Club, South con discard another Diamond from North and trump in his own hend, thus losing only one Diamond trick. If he leads a Diamond, whether the Ace or a small one, South must make one Diamond and his two trumps, only losing one Diamond trick. Thus South made his doubled con- tract, game, and rubber!
