Country Club: Draw ACCIDENTS AT SOOKUNPOO
For 1939-40 Ladies Cup
(By "Birdie")
“BALL VULTURES" or "scavengers" as they have previously been so aptly termed have recent- ly been making themselves a great' nuisance at Shoungshiu. They have been repeatedly "warned off" the course by the Committee of the Country Club, but on such a course, where out-of-bounds is invariably a paddy field or tilled ground owned by surrounding farmers, it is almost impossible to keep them from insiduously worming their ways back again and taking advantage of the in- accurate.
There was a most provoking incident last Sunday, which resulted in the course being cleared once more and warnings re-issued.
A PLAYER at the 8th, a dog- lox. drove the out of bounds, but when arriving, at the fairway where his ball should have been could see only the wide and unblemished open

He got one, but not what he ex- pected,

R. Engineers Defeat. 'Middlesex
IN A MATCH marred by |an unfortunate accident to Sgt. Blackman, of the Royal | Engineers, who' was carried off the field and 'sent "to hospital with, it is believed, Д fractured ankle, the Sappers beat the Middlesex by three points (a try) to nil at Sookunpoo yesterday.
The winner revealed a weak- ness behind the scrum, and it was this factor which was chiefly responsible for their victory by only three points. In the first half, the Middlesex had the better of the game, though dur ing. this. period, the Sappers scored following a sudden break- away.In the second period, however, the Suppers, would have scored on at least three occasions had they possessed a nippier pair of halves,
Waite played a sterling gume in the loose and punted.: to great ad- vantage, but his starved his three- quarters. Nautch, on the other hand, was slow in setting his backs going. The play of the Middlesex, was more spectacular. because they adopted the policy of "opening out" the game. Thus, several good three- quarter movements were seen. Why they did not fruelify was because diagonal running was resorted to. This mistake was common to both sides.
DISJOINTED PLAY
י.
Play on the whole was disjointed due mainly to the fact that players were prone to individualism. Three- quarters not infrequently attempted
dash through and were invariably brought down where a quick pass to the wing might have succeeded.

A week or two before the cham- planship was played al, Bad Ems, Mrs. Critchley took the cap to the German Embassy in London and asked if they would have it sent back to Germany for her.
This ey refused to do. How- C. over, Lieut-Colonel J. T. Moore-Brabazon, who proponed to play in the German amateur cham- plonship, said he would take the cup over with him.
At the last moment he decided not to compete. So the cup re- mained in his office in London.
A Belgian, Mille. Denise Oury, won the championship, but there was no trophy to present to her! Thus it is that Great Britain now possesses the three German by Open, won Folf curs-the Harry Bentley? anul, of course, the women's
