U-Boat Commander Shows. Chivalry Of The Seas
BRITISH CREW
TAKES BREATHER
ON ENEMY CRAFT
THE
crew of the British vessel Inverliffey, sunk in the Atlantic, were taken for a ride on a German submarine as they stood around the conning tower waist deep in water.
The story of their escape and of the courtesy of the young submarine commander was told by Third Officer Albert Lang, one of the Inverliffey's crew, when he reached England. "When the German submarine fired at us," he said, "we sent out an SOS and tried to get away, but shells continued to burnt all around us, and we knew it was no good.
"There was a crew of farly on board and we lowered bonts as soon as we could get away.
"I was one of eight in the last boat, and us we rowed away the submarine fred into the Invertiffey amidships.
"She went up with a big rear.

Germany is bullding two 35.000- ion battleships to be armed with 15-inch guns, but these are unlike- ly to be completed until late nexi year. A third has probably been laid down.
The so-called "pocket battleships" Deutschland, Admiral Scheer and Admiral Graf Spec, completed ba- tween 1933 and 1930, have displace- of 10,000 tons, with arma- ments ments of six 11-inch, eight 5.0-in- and six 4.1-inch anti-aircraft guns. They mount eight torpedo tubes and curry two aircraft apiece.
With a full speed slightly in ex- ccss of 20 knots, they carry 1,000 "The submarine cruised away with us on her wave-washed decks tons of oil fuel which gives them n until we got bear our own boats.range of 10,000 miles. The present world record for short distance flying by an airplane is 440,681 m.D.h. made by Francesco Agello in Italy Oct. 28, 1934. Maxi- mum future speeds of 800 have been predicted.
The metallurgist forecast new lightweight engines for service in the air, and declared that planes would be built capable of climbing higher altitudes,
to
Greater safety in flying was also predicted as forthcoming from the new alloys through lessening hazards to mechanical parts.
Addressing the seventy-sixth meet- Ing of the Electrochemical Society at the Commodore Hotel here yes- terday, Dr. Winston held that re- search and development altcridant upon America's rearmament pro- gramme of the last two years was responable for the large advance in the magneslum industry.
Not only are the new magnesium alloys but two thirds the weight of aluminium and but one fourth the weight of steel, they are also more thus in- impervious to corrosion, creasing an airplane's reliability as well as lis speed and manoeuvr ability, he said. Flying machines using the now alloys also will be able to carry heavier londs, since less of the weight will be wasted in body material, he added.

The larger submarines mount one inch or three 3.5 inch guns, and have five or six torpedo-tubes; the smaller have one small gun and three torpedotubes.
The bigger U-boats can probably cruise for fully 7,000 or 8,000 miles without refuelling.
