I also enclose for Your Lordship's information copy of my minute of the 4th May referring the question of the state of the latrines to the Colonial Surgeon, Dr. Ayres. In his reply of the 29th of May he gives reasons for his thinking that nothing could be done to carry out the dry earth system in Hougtong Gaol: though he sees that even in the warden's quarters the stench is, at times, sickening; that the previous warden's health suffered much in consequence.
