You then went on, however, with the restitution of the junk and I am to make propositions on behalf of the Government regarding the opium to the extent claimed hereafter. You are to request pecuniary compensation for the boat, the quantity of opium seized, and the rendition to the Chinese of the W. nan/ whose junk it was seized.
It is impossible for the Government to entertain any wavering on this matter. The outrage was of such a character and was treated with so much nonchalance by the taotai in the first instance that this Government is not disposed to abate anything of the satisfaction which it has been under the necessity of seeking.
It therefore can only be contented with what has been sought heretofore without any conditions whatsoever.
So long a time has now been occupied in making amends, the main object which the Government had in view in requiring the restitution of the actual junk is now defeated, and His Excellency The Administrator will not therefore stretch further the point of whether this return is made in kind or money, especially as he is most anxious to close this matter before the arrival of Mr Hennessey.
