LONDON, Oct. 11 (Reuter). -A special commentary on the British coonomic strength
been released.
has
It is stated that in connection with Germany's claim of her economic strength, and the
weakness of Britain, the follow- ing points may be useful.
Britsin
ib stcond richest country in the world, second only to the United States.
The average income per head of the British peopic is £112, wherens the average income per head of the Greater Relch is only £64 10s,
The British people, therefore, can afford to spend nearly twice as much on the war as the Germans.
For every gun which Germany can afford make. Britain can mako iwo. For every aeroplane
Germany produces Bellain Cza afford to make two.
When the British war effort is fully mobiilsed, they can expect near- ly twleo as much power as Germany.
Incomparably Stronger
Britain is Incomparably alronger. Anancially than Germany, Her gold reserve is over £500,000,000, whereas Germany has hardly any gold reserve at all. Britain has foreign Invest- ments totalling £3,000,000,000 where- as Germany has none.
Without exporting anything at all, Britain could pay for imports of foort and raw material for at least 18 months, wherens Germany has only enough foreign exchange to pay for Imports for two months.
As far as taxation Is' concerned, Britain compares favourably, The German married man has to pay In- come tax as won as his ine wave reaches 205 per year. The British married laxpayer does not begin fr pay until he is corning £225.
