MORE HOCKEY UMPIRES REQUIRED
PRESSING PROBLEM NEEDS SOLUTION Formation of Control Body Suggested
(By "Pilgrim")
From time to time last season I heard complaints about the shortage of umpires and general laments that more umpires are net available. It is admitted that the Umpires Hockey Board have Carried out wonderful work, but their work is cramped owing to tile continued shortago of officials to cover^many senior and moat of the junior matches in the women's leagues and the HK.HA. Tournament. It is like a voice crying in the wilderness to appeal season by season to retired players and others to come forward and assist the game.
But we should go step further i than the present. Umpires Board. We should have a governing body for Umpires in the Colony such aa we have for, the game and based on the same liries as regards amilution.
Are we not playing with the sub- ject by delaying this daal (organisa-i tion and bringing the whole of the Cofony umpires under one common executive? I am sure, the H.KHA, would hot oppose the institution of such an association, but wouki give
its blessing and good wishes.
After all, the governing body has real duty to the game and to the umptres, and it is a job of work it has to carry out on behalf of the welfare of the game as a whole. The garne cannol Nourish or continue prosperous unless and until the umj pires in the Colony are properly and Intensively organized.

The match between the Hongkong Cricket Club and the Kow- loon Cricket Club was played on Tuesday, last-the Double Tenth- and although some of the cricket was not very brilliant there were one or two very encouraging features to be noticed by those, who, like myself, have been considerably worried about the future of cricket in Hongkong.

other good sign was the keenness shown by both sides on a day which I personally found extremely trying, from the climatic point of view, and which must have been very difficult indeed for people actually engaged in cricket.
