fr Lamma Island: arriving off the Chief Village at 11.40.
I immediately proceeded on board the Mandarin junks at anchor off this place, in company with M. Barnard, Navigating Sub-Lieutenant. I saw the Mandarin in charge of one of the junks and wished him to go on board the Curlew and assist us in searching the villages on the Island, but he informed me that he had no jurisdiction on shore and that I had better see the Mandarin in charge of the Village; for this purpose I went on shore accompanied by Mr. Barnard and the Mandarin, but on making enquiries at the village we were informed that the Official had gone to Kowloon. As I found it was useless to waste more time, I returned to Curlew and left this place for George Bay, Lamma Island, at 2.15 pm.
Passing close along the Southern and Eastern shore, and examining all the Bays and Inlets.
