Minute 14. E. The Garner.

With respect to the first part of the Attorney General's letter, a full statement of the circumstances and an answer be made in this case.

(Signed) Hennessy 18th May 187?

Minute by the Colonial Secretary.

The circumstances of the case are simple enough, viz.: that the lieutenant and one of the officers of the "Wrangler" have applied for night passes in order that they may walk about the town freely at night; which they cannot otherwise do in consequence of being taken for Chinamen.

Send the papers again to the Attorney General.

(Signed) J. Gardiner Austin, Colonial Secretary 18th May 1877
