I cannot discover that there is any scarcity of local currency, in fact the supply is ample for the requirements of the coming export season, and I therefore hope that should His Excellency the Governor consider legislation necessary, it will be with the view of raising and not lowering the standard of coin current in the Colony.

By Order in Council published Gazette of 2nd May 1878 It was declared that the Dollar of Mexico or other silver dollar of equivalent value as might from time to time be authorized by the Governor should be the only legal tender for payment except for small sums Hong Kong; it depends.
I am not aware that it has ever been decided that chopped Mexican Dollars are within the Order in Council.
