I believe although first occasion which the Chinese have addressed the Government on the subject : What they apparently want is that Dollars (known as Toochow Dollars) which are defaced and broken by the systure of chechting which prevails in the South of China and depreciated in value by the admixture and adh. of a variety of foreign matter, shall be looked upon as of equal value with Dollars of similar weight not adulterated and depreciated. The Dollar current in this Colony is the Dollar of Mexico and it is freely & moderately chopped it is pretty taken in business, but naturally of chopped course in the when coins are to such an extent as to destroy their identity, they then take their position in the market as Bullion.
It is a difficult question to say what is and what is not a Hong Kong current Dollar and it is just dependent on the Bank Compradores for a definition and they are frequently not of one opinion. It would be to the advantage of the Commercial community if this were rectified by law but I fear it would be a matter of great difficulty to find a remedy as long as chopping is a current practice.
