though this is I believe the first time they have addressed the Government on the subject. Frequently when such currency is at a considerable discount some such attempt has been made and resisted. The supply of Hongkong currency is much larger now than it was during the whole of last year and no inconvenience is apparent. The stoppage of one branch of trade, of which the memorialists complain, is brought about by a Guild deciding to refuse, obstinately, to comply with the law and usage of the Colony and endeavouring to pass it "par" dollars which are worth only 1 to 11/8th percent discount.

In conclusion I have the honour to express a hope that any legislation on this point be directed rather towards elevating than lowering the standard of Dollars current in this Colony - the only British possession where such a currency is tolerated! Recently, the managers of all the Banks and The Chamber of Commerce I had the honour of addressing, suggested the coinage of British Dollars, which suggestion I venture to forward for the consideration of His Lordship The Secretary of State for the Colonies.
