Moreover, in my personal experience with the Calcutta mint, I have heard the Master having refused Currency sent in for coinage into Rupees and warned the representative of this Bank in Calcutta that he would probably reject altogether silver so mixed up with extraneous matter. I have written to India for copies of the correspondence on this subject and will, on receipt, have the same handed to you for your information.

Briefly, what the Chinese Memorialists request is that Dollars more or less broken and depreciated by the admixture of some amount of foreign matter shall be regarded as equal in value with Dollars of like weight not so depreciated; that the importers of Dollars shall pay away good Silver weight and not receive back the same weight of silver mixed with matter of less value.

Should you so wish, I shall be glad to hand you specimens of "Foochow" currency for inspection.

I have further noted that there is nothing to show that the Chinese are attempting to induce Merchants to accept "Foochow Dollars" in this Colony.
