Corporal Atkinson was in charge of mechanical trans- port at Jinsafut Camp, truck Palestine, when caught fire.

A petrol tank became in- volved and Private McAvoy, to relieve pressure on the tank and try to avert an ex- plosion, took a pick-axe and, without any thought for his own safety pierced the tank. The jet of burning petrol which gushed out caused him to be badly burned.

In spite of this, the tank exploded, spreading burning petrol over a wide aren.

Company Sergeant-Major Brindle and Private Fowler, despite interse heat and danger, rescued several men whose clothing was alight.

Corporal Atkinson was neverely burnt in endeavour- ing to save the life of a comrade.
