Eye-Witness Account Of The Taking Of Shumchun By The Japanese
PEASANTS SHOT DOWN IN COLD

Permanent Occupation of Shumchun Expected
From Our Staff Representative At Sheung Shui.
THE JAPANESE COMPLETELY OCCUPIED SHUM- CHUN THIS MORNING, AND I HAVE JUST SPOKEN TO A WOUNDED PEASANT, WHO AFTER SHOOTING TWO JAPANESE, FLED INTO BRITISH TERRITORY WITH JAPANESE SOLDIERS IN HOT PURSUIT. HE HAS TOLD ME A STORY OF RUTHLESS EXTERMINATION BY THE JAPANESE OF ALL PEASANTS FOUND IN SHUMCHUN POSSESSING ARMS AND AMMUNITION.
"Immediately the Japanese soldiers gained access to the city," he declared, while a member of the Hongkong emergency ambulance unit tended his wounded arm, "they instituted a house to house search, and every peasant or occupant found possessing arms or ammunition was taken outside and summarily executed. SHOT ON THE SPOT
"I saw several peasants caught with rifles in their possession, shot down on the spot although they had sur- rendered."
The man confirmed that practically no opposition was offered to the Japanese advance, begun at midnight from Poan, by recognised Chinese soldiers, but large numbers of peasants armed with rifles, put up some resistance close to and inside Shumchun, and he testified that there was quite a large number of Japanese casualties as a result.
"I myself," he declared, "managed to shoot two Japanese soldiers, but then I was confronted with a band of them, who pursued me to the border and fired 100 rounds at me.

Defences Attack
LONDON, Aug. 16 (Reuter).-"SOME of us who are
familiar with conditions in the East feel it is as well to remind
friend as well as foe that Hongkong is by no means as defence- less as the ignorant may think," declares Colonel Lewis Robin- son in a letter to the "Daily Telegraph.".
The author of the letter describes Hongkong's defences and fighting forces in detail and declares that Hongkong could withstand a complete blockade for at least nine months. Naval action could adequately be dealt with by fixed and mobile guns and submarines, while landings or attacks from the mainland could be held up for months or years.
"Col. L. G. Robinson was Assistant Director of Supplies and Transport, China Command, in Hongkong until July 26 last year when he retired and went home on retired pay the following month.
