CANTON, Aug. 14 (Our Own Correspondent).—THIS is a tale of revenge which has only just reached Canton.
Four Japanese officers were invited last week to a party
at Au Wu, in the Punyu district. Life is often dull for these officers, so they accepted the invitation.
While they were enjoying themselves, they suddenly found themselves surrounded by armed men. In defending themselves, two of them were badly wounded and have since died.
It was a trap laid by Chinese guerillas in retaliation for the many atrocities committed by the Japanese soldiers in that vicinity.
Determined to seek some form of revenge, the villagers issued the invitation to these officers who, all unsuspecting. walked right into the trap. They had been so won over by the kind words of the villagers that they did not take a personal guard with them.
