In reference to your letter No. 309 of the 27th ult., informing me that His Excellency entertains my application for half-pay of my office as Registrar during the period of any appointment, on the ground that as far as His Excellency is aware there is no precedent entitling an officer serving in this Colony to draw the Salary of another appointment in another Colony. I would respectfully submit for His Excellency's further consideration the cases of certain officers which appear to furnish such precedents.
First, there is the case of Sir William Tachite, Judge of Penang, who was lent away from the Straits Settlements on a special mission to the Crown Colony of the Fiji Islands and which employed there for a period of 12 Months drew the half salary of the office as Judge of Penang, moreover did not return to the Straits Settlements
