On Nation Last Night" UNDER ARMS
LONDON, Aug. 9 (Reuter). The fact that 160 air raids were made during the early part of the night alone -100 against the southern defending area and 60 against the northern zone-is revealed in Air Ministry communiques recording the
progress of the air exercises in which 1,300 aeroplanes are participating. The communiques state that the attackers first con- centrated against the Thames estuary, 60 fighter patrols! participating in defence.
Later the attacks were mainly directed against the northern and eastern defended areas, where 40 Aghter patrols replied, though the defenders were tampered by low clouds and a 10 miles wide belt of rain.
Light and heavy anti-aircraft guns! were also in action. The observer corps worked smoothly, and the bal- Icon barrage was flown at "war stations" without Incident.
