Algiers Gas Explosion
ALGIERS, July 27. AT LEAST five were killed and about 50 injured in an explosion and fire on the quayside in Algiers to-day.
The condition of 15 of the injured is so serious that they are not expected to live,
The catastrophe originated from an explosion of a reser- voir containing gas, which reacted to the intense rays of the
sun,
The explosion was heard all over the city, and the fire quickly spread to warehouses filled with sugar and other inflammable goods.
The flames also swept along to the steamer St. Ambroise which was lying in the harbour carrying about 75 tons of butane gas.
While the fire fighters succeeded in quelling the blaze aboard the ship, the warehouses were completely destroyed.
A number of dock workers were injured some considerable distance from the explosion, while others nearer to the scene, jumped into the harbour with their clothes ablaze, presenting an appearance of living torches.
The damage is estimated at more than 15,000,000 francs, -Trans-Occa71.
